History of ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ

Over 130 Years of Learning Beyond the Classroom

Since 1893, the University of Utah has expanded access to education through continuing education, lifelong learning, professional development, and digital learning.

1893

Began offering extension and correspondence education beyond the traditional campus.

1911

Established the Department of Extension Work.

1916

Reorganized as the Extension Division.

1964

Renamed the Division of ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ, expanding opportunities for adult and community learners.

2000

Evolved into Academic Outreach and ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ, broadening access through flexible formats and programs.

2008

Launched UOnline services to support online learning and course development.

2014

Expanded into fully online degree programs and broader digital learning initiatives.

2020

Integrated continuing education and online learning under Continuing and Online Education.

2021

Established University Connected Learning (UCL), bringing together ÁñÁ«ÊÓÆµ, Digital Learning, and UOnline.

2026

UCL connects the University of Utah with learners through continuing education, professional development, lifelong learning, online education, and community engagement.
